Modifiers - create, assign and use items as options

Created by Gerencia Invupos, Modified on Wed, 7 Oct at 3:31 PM by Ana Virginia Rodriguez

Applies to the Invu Admin Panel and Invu POS 6.10.1. Items as options require POS version 6.9.3 or later. Labels are shown as they appear when the panel and the POS are in English; several builder texts are only available in Spanish.

The four modifier types

TypeHow it behaves on the POS
ForcedAsked when the item is added. You must choose between the Minimum and Maximum number of options. If the cashier closes without confirming, the item is not added.
OptionalNot asked when the item is added. Add it afterwards: press and hold the item line in the order.
Forced VariableAsked when the item is added. Each option has a default quantity that can go up or down (portions). The price is multiplied by the quantity, including the default quantity.
MultipleHas no options: it groups other modifiers. Use it as an option's Next Modifier (combos). If you assign it directly to an item, the POS does not show it.

In the English panel the type list may show the names in capitals (OPTIONAL, FORCED, MULTIPLE, FORCED-VARIABLE).

1. Create a modifier

  1. In the Admin Panel, go to Menu > Modifiers and tap Create Modifier.
  2. Enter the Name (it cannot repeat) and choose the Modifier Type. Leave the Code empty so it is generated automatically.
  3. Set Minimum and Maximum. Maximum must be 1 or more: with 0, the POS does not let you choose any option.
  4. Modifier settings:
    • Repeat Allowed?: lets the same option be chosen more than once.
    • Charge Only Greater?: charges only the most expensive option the customer picks; the rest stay at 0.
  5. Tap Add modifier option and type the name (Description) and Sale Price in the row. The option's detail panel (pencil icon) lets you add more: image, Next Modifier, order types, Visible on Print?, Count as diner? and Ecommerce. Then apply it to the row.
  6. Tap Create Modifier. Everything is saved with one click.
  • Recipe for an option: save the modifier first. Then open it, tap the recipe icon on the row and add product, quantity and unit.
  • Price by order type: the Multiple prices tab lets you give an option a different price for an order type (for example, delivery).
  • Option missing from the kitchen ticket: check that Visible on Print? is on.
  • Once a modifier has sales, its code and name cannot be changed.

2. Use an item as an option

Use it to offer items from your menu inside a modifier (for example, a combo's drink) and have their inventory deducted.

  1. In the modifier builder, tap the add-item button (Agregar ítem, shown in Spanish), type at least 2 letters and choose the item.
  2. A row is added with the item's name and price. Adjust the price if you want (for example, 0 so it is included in the combo) and save.
  • Only active items of type Normal, with a fixed price and no serial number, can be chosen.
  • The price is copied only once: if you later change the item's price, the option does not change.
  • Inventory is deducted with the item's recipe and from its warehouse. The option cannot have its own recipe.
  • A saved option cannot switch to another item. To offer a different one, create another option and archive the old one.
  • If the item is locked on the POS, the option shows as locked too.

3. Combos with Multiple

  1. Create the combo's modifiers, for example Drink (Forced) and Side (Forced), with items as options.
  2. Create a Multiple modifier and, under its assigned modifiers, add those modifiers in the order they should be asked.
  3. On the option that opens the combo (for example, "Upsize combo"), choose the Multiple in Next Modifier.

To allow several units (for example, 2 drinks), set Minimum and Maximum to 2, and turn on Repeat Allowed? if the same one can repeat.

4. Assign modifiers to an item

From the item (sets the order):

  1. Go to Menu > Menu, open the item and go to the Assigned Modifiers tab.
  2. Tap Assign Modifiers. Under Available modifiers, tap Assign on each one.
  3. Under Assigned to item, drag to set the order the POS asks them in, and tap Save.

From the modifier (to many items at once): in the modifiers list, tap the assign-items icon, move the items to Assigned and tap Assign Items. Then adjust the order on each item with Edit Order.

  • Modifiers are not assigned to categories: they are assigned per item, in bulk from the modifier, or by Excel import.
  • The order the POS asks in is each item's Modifier Order, not the modifier's own Order field.

5. See the changes on the POS

  1. If your business uses the Publish Center, publish the pending changes.
  2. On the POS, press and hold the Invu logo and choose Update Data.

New modifier selector: under Settings > System > Settings, Services section, turn on the new modifier selector option and then run Update Data. It shows every group in a single list, marks the Required ones and is confirmed with Add to order.

Temporarily remove an option (for example, when it runs out): on the POS, go to System Reports > Locked menu > Locked modifiers.

Common problems

  • The modifier does not appear when adding the item. It may be Optional (add it by pressing and holding the line), a Multiple assigned directly to the item, have no option valid for the current order type, be inactive or unassigned, or the POS has not been updated (Update Data).
  • The POS does not let you continue. You must choose between the Minimum and Maximum options. Check that Maximum is not 0 or lower than Minimum. If you imported from Excel, check that Minimum and Maximum were not saved as 0.
  • The item disappears when closing the selector. Closing without confirming cancels the item; complete the required groups and confirm.
  • The price is not what you expected. Check Charge Only Greater?, the Multiple prices per order type and, in Forced Variable, that the price is multiplied by the quantity.
  • "Edit modifiers" does not appear on the line. It only exists if the item has forced modifiers and has not been sent to the kitchen yet.
  • The item option does not deduct inventory. The item needs its own recipe; inventory is deducted when the order is closed.
  • "Esta opción usa la receta del ítem. Edita la receta desde el ítem." (shown in Spanish) The option is linked to an item: change the item's recipe.
